- Pre-1800: Japan has a long history of distilling beverages, but it wasn’t until the Meiji Restoration in 1868 that the country began to produce whisky in the Western style.
- 1913: Masataka Taketsuru, a young Japanese chemist, travels to Scotland to study whisky production. He returned to Japan in 1920 and went to work for Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory.
- 1949: Torii establishes the Mars Shinshu Distillery in Nagano Prefecture. The distillery is named after the Shinshu region, known for its high altitude and cold climate, which are ideal for producing whisky.
- 1985: Mars releases its first whisky, the Mars Komagatake Single Malt Whisky.
- 2015: Mars releases Iwai 45, a blended Japanese whisky named after Kiichiro Iwai, a master blender who was instrumental in developing Japanese whisky in the 20th century.
- 2018: Iwai 45 wins a gold medal at the World Whiskies Awards.
- 2019: Iwai 45 is named one of Whisky Advocate magazine’s “Best Whiskies of the Year”.

The flavour profile of Iwai Whiskey 45
Nose
As soon as you pour this whisky into a glass and give it a sniff, you’ll notice strong notes because this whisky has a fair amount of and a very piercing nose.
When you add a bit of water, the original notes of Japanese whisky will open up, and you’ll get a feel of the original Japanese whisky.
You’ll also find a good amount of fruitiness and zesty fruit notes, with apple being the predominant note.
A hint of honey and caramel notes can also be detected.
Some people also detect notes of toffee and vanilla, while others describe the nose as woody or smoky.

Palate/Taste
